Introducing a project to publish the Getty Vocabularies as LOD

I am currently leading a project to publish all four Getty Vocabularies as LOD. The four Getty Vocabularies are: the Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT)®, the Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)®, the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names TGN)®, and the Cultural Objects Name Authority (CONA)™.  We are on track to start with AAT in July of this year. We will then move on to TGN, ULAN and finally CONA. Here is a PDF version of the most current flier – vocab_lod_flier

I am also interested in advice from the LODLAM community on what it takes to build and maintain a successful community of consumers of LOD versions of AAT, TGN, ULAN and CONA. Some of the discussions that would be helpful to us are:

  • Best ways to host and encourage open communication threads regarding things like issues, comments about our ontologies, offers of help, examples of complex SPARQL queries to share, etc.
  • Creating a road-map for community-built, open-source tools for access, contributing, matching, etc.
  • Use cases from the community

From the desk of Rachel Frick, who’s leading the LODLAM Challenge…

It was not easy. For all those who entered, thank you for making this a difficult decision.

After much deliberation and taking into consideration the popular vote, we are pleased to announce the two finalists from Heat 2 of the LODLAM Challenge:

Although not a finalist, we want to give special shout-out and an honorable mention to WWI Linked Data.

Nice work, Everyone!

This rounds out the slate of 5 challenge finalists that will be competing head-to-head at the LODLAM Summit June 19-20, 2013 in Montreal.

All finalists have earned travel grants for the trip to Montreal and the chance to win a $2000USD cash prize.

A big thank-you to all the teams who submitted entries. It was great to see such creativity and wide range of ideas.

The LODLAM community rose to the challenge and amazed us.

If you didn’t get a chance to look at the entries – check out the talent in both heats:

Announcing Heat 1 LODLAM Challenge Finalists

We’re very excited to announce the three finalists from Heat 1 of the LODLAM Challenge. We had 10 amazing entries, so the voting was very tough. These three finalists earn travel grants to the LODLAM Summit June 19-20, 2013 in Montreal, and the chance to compete for bragging rights and a $2,000 USD cash prize.

Big thanks to all of the teams who participated in Heat 1. Heat 2 will be open from Feb 1 through May 1, 2013 and we’ll be selecting two more finalists then.

Challenge Entries now open for voting

The first round of LODLAM Challenge entries are now open for voting until December 15. Public votes count for about 30% of consideration for selecting finalists, and a panel of judges plus the organizing committee (who don’t have conflicts of interest) makes up the balance of the decision making process. We’ll be announcing three finalists by December 20th.

On behalf of the 2013 LODLAM Summit organizing committee, I’d like to thank all of the entrants for putting together amazing proposals which really highlight the quality and innovation of work in this new space.
